Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel, B. Cathedral Quarter, Exeter

Exeter Cathedral Close

The Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel is situated on a road called Southernhay East. It takes a few minutes to walk to Exeter Cathedral Close so the hotel's in a superb location.

Leave the Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel, wander up Southernhay East and then Southernhay West and you'll come to Cathedral Close on your left.

Exeter Cathedral

Follow Cathedral Close lane and you come to the east end of Exeter Cathedral. One of the UK's great buildings is on the Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel's doorstep.

Barnfield Theatre

If you fancy a trip to the theatre then Exeter Barnfield Theatre is also a few minutes' walk from the hotel.

Leave the Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel and follow Southernhay East until you come to Barnfield Road. Turn right and the theatre's in front of you.

City Wall

The hotel gets its name from the South Gate which was part of the Roman Exeter City Wall.

Turn right out of the hotel and Southernhay East meets Magdalen Street and then South Street. You'll see a plaque and an information board that's part of the Exeter City Wall Trail. We'd recommend walking the trail to learn more about the city.

Quayside

You'll see a footbridge spanning the very busy Western Way. This takes you down to Exeter's Historic Quayside. The place is a joy.

It takes a few minutes to walk to the quayside from the Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel.

River Exe, Exeter Canal and the Exe Estuary

Exeter's Historic Quayside lines the River Exe and Exeter Canal (Exeter Ship Canal). You can walk or cycle down the Exe Estuary. Amazing part of Devon and the Westcountry.

High Street

Exeter High Street, and all its shops, is on the other side of Exeter Cathedral Close. Again, it's a very short walk to get to the High Street.

Princesshay

Exeter Princesshay is a relatively recently developed shopping centre and leisure area.

Walk up Southernhay East and then Southernhay West and you'll come to Barnfield Road. Turn left and you'll be in Princesshay.

Exeter Underground Passages

Princesshay and the High Street run into Paris Street. There, you'll find the wonderful Exeter's Underground Passages.

Exeter's Royal Albert Memorial & Art Gallery (RAMM)

Exeter's Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) is located on Queen Street which runs off the High Street.

Exeter Woollen Trail, Exeter City Wall Trail and Exeter Medieval Trail

In addition to the aforementioned Exeter City Wall Trail, walk the Exeter Woollen Trail and the Exeter Medieval Trail.

Activities

If you want to enjoy outdoor or indoor adventure activities, we'd recommend heading down to the quayside. Try climbing, watersports, cycling and boat trips. There are many excellent walking trails along the Exe Estuary.
