Exeter Cathedral Close

Exeter Cathedral Close is opposite Southernhay House Hotel.

Wander out onto Southernhay East from the superbly located Southernhay House Hotel. Turn right and then immediately left across Southernhay West into Cathedral Close. Pass under the 1814 cast iron footbridge and you'll come to the east end of Exeter Cathedral.

 

Exeter Cathedral

Follow the path around the north side of the cathedral to its famous west end and its three rows of medieval sculptures. The official entrance to Exeter Cathedral is at the west end of the building.

 

Barnfield Theatre and Vue Cinema

Turn right out of Southernhay House Hotel, walk up Southernhay East and you'll come to Barnfield Road. Exeter Barnfield Theatre is to your right.

If you fancy a film, continue on Southernhay East to Paris Street. Turn right and Vue Cinema is on the roundabout.

 

Princesshay

Alternatively, when you come to Barnfield Road, turn left and cross Southernhay West into Exeter Princesshay with its shops, restaurants and cafes.

 

Exeter's Underground Passages

At the top of Princesshay, where it meets Paris Street, turn left and you come to the superb, quirky Exeter's Underground Passages.

 

High Street

From Exeter Underground Passages, continue to the top of Exeter High Street. You'll see John Lewis where the High Street meets Sidwell Street.

 

Exeter's Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM)

Follow the High Street down to Queen Street, turn right and you'll come to Exeter's Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM).

 

Exeter City Wall Trail, Exeter Woollen Trail and Exeter Medieval Trail

Southernhay House Hotel faces the ancient Exeter City Wall. We'd recommend following the Exeter City Wall Trail. You'll walk from information board to information board discovering the city's history and culture as you go.

In addition to the Exeter City Wall Trail, you can also follow the Exeter Woollen Trail and Exeter Medieval Trail.

 

Quayside

Turn left out of Southernhay House Hotel, walk down Southernhay East to Magdalen Street. Follow Magdalen Street into South Street. Cross the road and take the footbridge over the busy Western Way before dropping down to the quayside.

 

River Exe, Exeter Canal and the Exe Estuary

From the quayside, we'd recommend walking or cycling to the Exe Estuary on the Exe Estuary Trail.
