G. West Quarter, Exeter

Independent shops

The West Quarter is great for independent shops away from the major shopping centres. Head for Fore Street. There is a farmers' market at the top of Fore Street every Thursday morning.

Exeter Corn Exchange

If you're looking for comedy and live entertainment, try Exeter Corn Exchange on Market Street just off Fore Street.

The Bike Shed Theatre

[Now closed. Alternatively, head for the nearby Bike Shed Theatre. They 'make and present productions with some of the finest small-scale companies in the UK'. (The Bike Shed Theatre website)]

St Nicholas Priory

'The building, now interpreted as an Elizabethan town house, was one of the four ranges which enclosed the cloister of a medieval monastery. It has a claim to being the oldest standing building in Devon (except for ruins and fragments) and its earliest portions display early Norman architecture rarely seen in the country.' (St Nicholas Priory guidebook)

Note that St Nicholas Priory is not open to the public at present owing to building work.

21 The Mint

21 The Mint was once part of St Nicholas Priory. It has been open to the public on special heritage days but normally one to view from the outside.

Tuckers Hall

A plaque outside Tuckers Hall reads: 'Tuckers Hall belonging to the Guild of Weavers, Fullers & Shearmen. Incorporated in 1490.'

There are limited opening times so refer to the Tuckers Hall website for detail.

Tuckers Hall is part of the Exeter Woollen Trail. Much of the city's past wealth and status was created by the woollen cloth trade. Tuckers Hall was central to this industry.

Exeter Woollen Trail, Exeter City Wall Trail and Exeter Medieval Trail

Arguably the best way to discover Exeter is on foot following one of its trails. The Exeter Woollen Trail, Exeter City Wall Trail and Exeter Medieval Trail pass through The West Quarter.

If you want to be guided, join an Exeter Red Coat Guided Tour.

The House That Moved

The House That Moved is a beautiful 15th-century building that was literally moved on rollers to save it from roadworks!

Cafes

Try The Glorious Art House and The Hidden Treasure Tea Room.

Pubs and bars

The Fat Pig and Forn Bar & Restaurant are in The West Quarter.

Restaurants

In addition to Forn Bar & Restaurant mentioned above, there are plenty of restaurants along Fore Street such as Ganges and Jasmine Thai.
