H. Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site, Exeter

The Dorset and East Devon Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site is often referred to as the Jurassic Coast. In East Devon, it runs from Exmouth to the Dorset border by Lyme Regis.

The Geoneedle at Orcombe Point marks the west end of the Jurassic Coast overlooking Exmouth Beach, the mouth of the Exe Estuary and Dawlish Warren. It sits above Exmouth's dramatic red cliffs that run east to Budleigh Salterton.

As you approach The Geoneedle on the South West Coast Path from Exmouth you'll see coloured tiles in the path. These are the different types of rocks you'll encounter as you follow the Jurassic Coast 96 miles east to Old Harry Rocks by Swanage in Dorset.

There's lots of parking behind Exmouth Beach or take the train from Exeter to Exmouth and follow the South West Coast Path to The Geoneedle at Orcombe Point.

Note that there's a nice circular low tide walk along Sandy Bay Beach to the Devon Cliffs Holiday Park and then back along the cliffs back to Orcombe Point.

Budleigh Salterton

'To the west of the sea front lie the famous Budleigh Salterton Pebble Beds. The pebbles are composed of hard quartzite identical to 440 million year old rocks found in Northern France. The pebbles were formed and transported in one of the great rivers that flowed into the Triassic desert about 240 million years ago.' (The Official Guide To The Jurassic Coast Dorset and East Devon's World Heritage Coast: A Walk Through Time)

Famous for its red cliffs. Like the red cliffs at Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton, these were formed when what is now East Devon was a desert. Collectively, this stretch of coastline is known as the Triassic Coast and was formed 250 to 200 million years ago.

Stunning coastline dominated by high chalk white cliffs.

Beer Beach is quirky and beautiful. Visit Beer Quarry Caves. We'd recommend walking up to Beer Head and down into Hooken Landslide. Nearby Branscombe and its long shingle beach is also wonderful.

Major gateway to the Jurassic Coast, visit Seaton Jurassic Visitor Centre.

Just east of Seaton is the sublime Axmouth with its pretty harbour and views west along Seaton Beach to Beer Beach and Beer Head.

Lyme Regis

Essential UK visiting. Walk the South West Coast Path through Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs National Nature Reserve.
